Making safeguarding personal

The Care Act provides a new approach to safeguarding in terms of culture and practice, as it takes notice of what makes a real difference to people’s lives. The Act places a new emphasis on personalised care, aiming to achieve a more personalised approach to physical, mental and emotional well-being based on that person’s needs, without delay, and with that person being in control of their care. In response to this change, the ‘Making Safeguarding Personal initiative focuses on safeguarding, supporting people to improve or resolve their circumstances’ (ADASS, 2018a), acknowledging that individuals are experts in their own lives. This initiative is applicable to all agencies working with adults in relation to safeguarding. Social care and health providers need to work with agencies, services and people to adhere to making safeguarding personal.

Making Safeguarding Personal is about gaining the consent of an individual and supporting them to retain control and choice to improve their health, well-being and safety, and hearing about what they want as an outcome. In practice, it means that the individual needs to be involved at all stages of the safeguarding process to ensure a personalised approach is taken (West of Berkshire Safeguarding Adults Board, 2019).
